Now God will reveal God"s salvation history to all generations coming and going through the history of Exodus. The zeal of the kingdom of God, which has already begun with Abraham, will be unfolded again through the nation of Israel. For this journey, God waited 400 years and 80 years for Moses, the leader of the Exodus. Now Moses will know, realize, acknowledge and embrace the vision of God.
You are a husband of blood to me
God begins the long journey of Exodus with Moses, but on the way back from the Midians, where Moses stayed for 40 years, God tries to kill him (Exo 4:24). Then, when his wife Zipporah urgently circumcised his son, who had not yet been circumcised, and gave Moses the foreskin, God saves Moses (Exo 4:25,26). Moses must know. God will lead God"s people out of Egypt through Moses, but the subject of salvation is not Moses but Jesus Christ, the Gospel of grace that will be revealed in God"s covenant beyond Moses. Moses appears as a sign of the law to go to the gospel of grace. Therefore, neither Moses nor his children can become God"s people if they are breaking the circumcision covenant (Gen 17:14).
Bowed my Head and Worshipped
When Moses met Aaron, he told of God"s Words and miracles, gathered all elders of Israel, made them stand in front of Aaron, preached God"s words and performed miracles in front of the people (Exo 4:28-30). And the "people believed" and bowed down and worshipped when heard that God looked after their suffering (Exo 4:31)
Let my People Go
God told Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh and proclaim, "Let my people go" (Exo 5:1), which will be repeated until they leave Egypt (Exo 7:16, 8:1,20, 9:1,13, 10:3). But Pharaoh says, "I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go (Exo 5:2).” This is the beginning. Pharaoh, who claimed that he did not know God, will get to know who God is. Before God struck with His powerful hand, He already knew that Pharaoh will not allow them to leave, (Exo 3:19,20) that the women will take the silver, gold, clothing, and Egyptian goods (Exo 3:22), and even the death of the eldest son (Exo 4:23).
Pharaoh makes the Israelites’ workload more heavy (Exo 5:4-18), and the Israelites complain to Moses and Aaron when they received realistic suffering (Exo 5:19-21). In the words, "May the Lord look on you and judge you (Exo 5:21)," they have this belief of relief that "If God is really our God, He will not give us this kind of difficulty". Now, God will begin a bigger and tougher war than with the war with Pharaoh. This war will be against the deep-rooted thoughts of the Israelites, the self-centered mind with the faith that wants relief and pursue worldly things.
Moses Sway
Moses says, "Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” (Exo 5:22,23). Moses already knew the sufferings of the Israelites from 40 years ago, but when he faced complaints from the beginning, he was shaken. Moses still did not fully accept that the subject of the entire history of Exodus was God.
God’s Proclamation
God proclaims, “I am the Lord” (Exo 6:2). He also said to the children of Israel, “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians (Exo 6:6,7)." Then he repeats, "I am the Lord (Exo 6:8)." No other words are needed right now.
Moses who is unable to Settle
At this point, even if the Israelites don"t, Moses should believe in God. However, even though Moses delivered this proclamation of God to the children of Israel, they still did not listen to Moses because of their realistic sufferings. Then Moses says again, “If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips (Exo 6:12)?” Moses still needs time. Now the Bible takes a moment to breathe and breaks away from the tensions between God, Moses, and the Israelites, telling the genealogy of the Levites beginning with Jacob (Exo 6:14-25). Of course it was even before this, but this means that God had already prepared Moses and Aaron from the time of Jacob. Therefore, no matter what Moses says, God will surely use Moses. The short genealogy starts with, "It was this Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said (Exo 6:26)" and ends with "They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing the Israelites out of Egypt—this same Moses and Aaron (Exo 6:27)." God puts Moses ahead of Aaron and prepares for a full-fledged war of the Exodus. Even when God said, “I am the Lord. Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you (Exo 6:29),” Moses will say, “Since I speak with faltering lips, why would Pharaoh listen to me (Exo 6:30)?”
Why the War of Exodus is needed
The 10 Plagues starts with the words, "Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it (Exo 7:4,5).” In this war of Exodus, God repeatedly proclaims, "I am the Lord" (Exo 6:2,8,29, 12:12), and "know that I am the Lord" (Exo 6:7, 7:5,17, 8:10,22, 9:14,29, 10:2). It also reveals that this war is not a battle of strength between God and Pharaoh, but a war that proceeds as it was already in God"s plan (Exo 7:13,22, 8:15,19, 9:12,35).
First, Aaron"s staff, which became a snake as an example, devours the staffs that became the snakes of the Egyptian magicians (Exo 7:8-12). But the Pharaoh"s heart is hard. It has not yet started. The 10 plagues were not only for Pharaoh and Egyptians, but actually also for the Israelites to “discover who is God”. While the Israelites lived in Egypt, the land of abundance, for 400 years, they accepted many small and big gods in their minds and had long forgotten about the "Lord, their God" which they only heard of. That is why God started this war to reveal the “Lord, God” to God"s people and drive out the gods in the hearts of the Israelites.
9 Plagues
The first plague (Exo 7:14-25) was a “blood plague,” where the water of the Nile River turned into blood , and the plague of the Nile River, which was their god, became a disaster. The second plague (Exo 8:1-15) was a “frog plague,” which symbolized fertility. The number of frogs became overwhelming and disastrous. The third plague (Exo 8:16-19) was “lice plague,” which plagued not only livestock but also humans, and their god of life could do nothing about it. The fourth plague (Exo 8:20-32) was a “fly plague,” a disaster in which their gods could do nothing again, even if the land was being devastated by flocks of flies. The fifth plague (Exo 9:1-7) was a “plague on livestock,” and despite the fact that all their animals were dying, their god of livestock could do nothing. The sixth plague (Exo 9:8-12) was a “boil plague” that harmed people and the livestock, but like before, the Egyptian soldiers and the gods of medicine could do nothing. The seventh plague (Exo 9:13-35) was a “hail plague,” a disaster in which their god of the sky could do nothing, even if there were fireballs mixed with hail falling from heaven. The eighth plague (Exo 10:1-20) was a "locust plague", where the god of grain could do nothing even if the locust filled the land of Egypt and ate up all the remaining grains and trees that avoided the hail. The ninth plague (Exo 10:21-29) was a “darkness plague,” a disaster in which their sun god could do nothing, even if darkness covered all over Egypt for three days.
The Egyptian magicians were able to mimic the first and second plagues (Exo 7:22, 8:7). But from the third plague, they could not mimic it (Exo 8:18). From the fourth plague, there was no disastrous damage in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites lived (Exo 8:22, 9:4,7, 10:23). God distinguished God"s people from Pharaoh"s people (Exo 8:23). During the sixth plague, the "plague of boils", the Egyptian magicians also suffered from malignant boils (Exo 9:11), and during the seventh, "hail plague", both the servants and cattle of Pharaoh"s servants who feared the word of God escaped the plague (Exo 9:20). In the eighth ‘locust plague’, the Pharaoh"s servants also said to the Pharaoh, ‘Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?’ (Exo 10:7).
During the plagues, Pharaoh"s heart was consistently stubborn and hard (Exo 7:22, 8:15, 19,32, 9:7,12,35, 10:20, 11:10). It is better to say that God let Pharaoh live according to his sinner"s heart and self-centered heart rather than saying that God hardened his heart (Rom 1:26). During the fourth plague, the Pharaoh said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land (Exo 8:25). I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. (Exo 8:28),” but his heart hardened again. And during the seventh plague, he said, "I will let you go; you don’t have to stay any longer,” but his heart hardened once again and during the eight plague, he said, "Have only the men go and worship the Lord (Exo 10:11)," but his heart hardened again. Again during the ninth plague, he said, “Go, worship the Lord. Even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind (Exo 10:24)”, and allowed them to take their families and just leave their livestock, but the Pharaoh"s heart of course hardened again. It is not the time yet. We already know. We know that before Moses came back to Egypt, God spoke about the tenth plague, the plague on the firstborn (Exo 4:23). This is not God competing with Pharaoh, but God being the subject and proceeding according to His will.
10th Plague
Now there is one plague left. God says, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely." This tenth plague “The Plague of the Firstborn” is a plague in which all the firstborns, for both humans and animals, of Egypt will be killed, and the Egyptian god of life still cannot do anything. This plague will bring no harm to God"s people (Exo 11:7), and they will feel "joy" and "thrill", but it will be a great cry in all of Egypt (Exo 11:6).
Passover
The preparations for the 10th plague ,the death of the firstborns were, first, to take a lamb for their family, one for each household (Exo 12:3). Second, the sheep or goats had to be "year-old males without defect" (Exo 12:4,5). Third, the lambs had to be taken care of until the fourteenth day of the month, and on that day, all the members of the community of Israel will slaughter them at twilight (Exo 12:6). Fourth, they were to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs (Exo 12:7). Fifth, that night when they ate, they had to tuck their cloak into their belt, their sandals on their feet and staffs in their hand, roast the lamb"s head, legs and internal organs over a fire and eat it with bitter herbs hastily, without leaving any of it till morning, and if any is left, it had to be burnt (Exo 12:8-11). This is the "Passover" (Exo 12:11).
Now God will travel all over Egypt and will strike all the firstborn, humans and animals, and judge all the gods of Egypt. It will be revealed that only God is God (Exo 12:12). And the only sign that can let them survive when God strikes the land of Egypt is the blood of the Lamb. If there is blood, God will pass over that place and the plague will not strike (Exo 12:13). The plague will not strike them simply because they are Egyptian and the plague will not simply pass over them just because they are the Israelite descendants. We already know Moses" son"s circumcision incident (Exo 4:25,26) and that the servants and animals of Pharaoh"s servants who feared God"s Word during the seventh hail disaster were saved (Exo 9:20). Even the children of Israel will die without the "blood".
And we must remember. Since then, all Israel"s firstborns belong to God (Exo 13:12). And when the children ask why, we need to say and convey that when God led us out of Egypt where we were slaves, the Pharaoh"s heart was hard and did not send us, so God killed all the firstborns in the Egyptian kingdom, all males born first in the womb were sacrificed to God, so all firstborn sons must be redeemed (Exo 13:11-15). And this was like a sign on the hand and a symbol on the forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with His mighty hand (Exo 13:16).
Festival of Unleavened Bread
The Feast of Unleavened Bread was a seven-day festival from the Passover, and for seven days, it was necessary to eat only the unleavened bread without yeast (Exo 12:15,18,20, 13:3), and if they ate bread with yeast, they will be cut off from Israel (Exo 12:15, 19). God told them to "keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread" because God had brought out God"s people out of Egypt at that time (Exo 12:17). It was to keep the feast to remember God.
Every feast in the world has an event and it is established to commemorate and remember the event, but God"s feast is ordered by God first and then the event occurs. This is because God is the one who controls history. What God says will surely come true.
First Passover
Before the last plague, “The Plague of the Firstborn,” the Israelites prepared to leave according to God"s command. Each family had to take a lamb for the Passover, a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of the Israelites were to go out of the door of their houses until morning (Exo 12:21,22). And by making this a ordinance (Exo 12:43-51), the descendant were to keep this forever (Exo 12:24). People who heard all these words of God through Moses bowed their heads and worshipped. They had not yet accepted God as their God, but it is a little different from the last time (Exo 4:31).
Death of the Firstborn
Finally, on the night of the Passover, God struck all the firstborn of the land of Egypt, like God said, and there was a great cry in Egypt because all firstborns were strike, from the Pharaoh"s firstborn son to the cattle"s firstborn (Exo 12:29,30). Then Pharaoh tells Moses and Aaron to go and serve the Lord, including all the livestock (Exo 12:31). In fact, this was more like getting kicked out of Egypt rather than just coming out. So, according to Moses" words, the children of Israel came out of Egypt after obtaining gold, silver, and clothing from the Egyptians, took the Egyptian goods and left Egypt with 600,000 men, many other people, and lots of livestock (Exo 12:37-39). At the end of 430 years in Egypt, God"s people came out of Egypt (Exo 12:40,41).
Every moment, we need to remember. Without God"s grace, we should have died during the water judgment, during destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and during the tenth plague of Egypt, with the people who did not have the lamb"s blood.
Baptism in the Red Sea
The Almighty God could have called His people out of Egypt more easily and quickly with His power, but He will still make them fight the war of Exodus and cross the Red Sea. There are reasons to this. First, through the war of Exodus and the Red Sea, God judges Egypt, the symbol of the world (Exo 14:25-28), and save God"s people (Exo 14:29) at the same time. This history of judgment and salvation was seen during the Judgment of the Water and of the city of Sodom, and it will be repeated in the future and will be completed by the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. God will be glorified through all these processes and will make Him known as God (Exo 14:4,18). Second, it is to proclaim that all the works of salvation, including the Exodus and the Red Sea, are the sovereignty and power of God, not the qualifications or merits of the Israelites. God"s people who came before the Red Sea could only “fear,” “cry,” and “grudge” (Exo 14:10-12), but like what God did to Moses, through God"s love for His people (Eph 2:4), he will save them (Exo 14:13,14). Third, through the process of crossing the Red Sea, God kills the lifestyle of God"s people in Egypt (Exo 14:22) and gives them the consciousness (2co 5:17/ Gal 2:20) of giving them a new life (Exo 14:29). So Paul refers to this case as “baptism” (1co 10:2). But this is just consciousness, and later, in faith, the holy transformation of the identity as a sinner dying will be completed through Jesus Christ. Just as the children of Israel were with Moses (1co 10:2) and were baptized in the Red Sea, we will belong to Jesus Christ and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
God will be their God and they will be God"s people. God will surely do this, even if he has to give His rebellious people a new covenant and new heart (Jer 32:37-42/ Eze 36:26-28).
Praise of Salvation
The children of Israel now saw the power of God in Egypt and the Red Sea. And they feared God (Exo 14:31). The worship when they first heard about the plan for salvation through Moses (Exo 4:31) and the worship after witnessing the war of Exodus, and the worship (Exo 12:27) right now are all different.
Moses says, "In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling (Exo 15:13)." It means that God embraced His people within Him. Now, the place that embraces God"s people will go through "tabernacle" and "temple" (1ki 8:13,21) and go to "Jesus Christ" (Joh 15).
But we already know. After a month (Exo 16:1,2), those who feared God will become those who resent God because of food and water. The Exodus War and the Red Sea incident are not the completion but the beginning of the journey of salvation. Now, God"s people are saved, but they have to go through the “process of maturity” for sanctification. They will repeat the up and down of Abraham and Jacob more severely. It will continue until the Kingdom of God that God wants is fulfilled.
Cloud Pillar and Fire Pillar
God"s guidance at the same time as the Exodus was the “cloud pillar” and the “fire pillar”. It is better to see the cloud and fire pillars as God"s presence (Exo 33:7-11/ Num 12:5, 16:42/ Deu 31:15/ Ref. Exo 16:10, 19:9, 34:5/ Lev 16:2) and God"s guidance (Exo 40:36-38/ Num 9:18-23, 10:11,12, 14:14/ Neh 9:19) that were with them from the time they left Egypt until the end of their journey in the wilderness rather than just seeing it as protection, as the cloud pillar protecting them from the hot sun and the fire pillar protecting them from the cold nights.
God did not leave His place in front of the people with the pillars of cloud by day and pillars of fire by night (Exo 13:22), and the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels, so they can follow it (Exo 40:38). They stayed in the camp while the cloud was on the tabernacle (Num 9:18) and marched when the cloud rose (Num 9:22). Therefore, the pillars of clouds and pillars of fire refer to the "The history of the indwelling Holy Spirit" for the people of God who were saved.
The journey of salvation that made the People of God fight the war of Exodus only with God"s love, saved them by the blood of the lamb, and baptized them in the Red Sea with the power of God, the story of life in the wilderness will continue.
